It makes finding the line of action easier. It teaches you to work with simple, basic shapes. Cartooning teaches you to draw lively, loose and fluid. I think learning to draw (classic style) cartoons is very important, even if your primary interest is realism. This book is still in print from Walter Foster but the licensed characters were altered. Think of it this way: whether you want to play blues, jazz, heavy metal or disco you still have to learn your scales and chords and practice your fingering and rhythm.
